READING: THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER 'Affectionate, evocative, illuminating. A story of survival - of a flock, a landscape and a disappearing way of life. I love this book' Nigel Slater 'Triumphant, a pastoral for the 21st century' Helen Davies, Sunday Times, Books of the Year 'The nature publishing sensation of the year, unsentimental yet luminous' Melissa Harrison, The Times, Books of the Year Some people's lives are entirely their own creations. James Rebanks' isn't. The first son of a shepherd, who was the first son of a shepherd himself, he and his family have lived and worked in and around the Lake District for generations. Their way of life is ordered by the seasons and the work they demand, and has been for hundreds of years. A Viking would understand the work they do: sending the sheep to the fells in the summer and making the hay; the autumn fairs where the flocks are replenished; the gruelling toil of winter when the sheep must be kept alive, and the light-headedness that comes with spring, as the lambs are born and the sheep get ready to return to the fells.

READING: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

READING: This book of poetry does not read like a novel because of its rhyme, brevity and omission of detail. However, it is meant to teach, inspire, and awaken, opening eyes, ears and hearts to help examine ourselves, see who we as a people are, where we are headed and where we are taking our children, families, communities and nation, and what we can to do to help bring aboutor restorewholeness in our lives and the lives of others. The first poem in the collection, The Child Whod Come is inspired by a real and overlooked little girl caught in an unwholesome situation not of her making. Another poem, Grand Guardian, was inspired by real people. It is, though, written to a wider population who may be in the same circumstances as the individual whose silent, passionate voice we hear as we read, and the human subjects that the individual addresses. Other poems in the collection are reflections on Almighty God and the love he has for his people and creation. Still others have personal thoughts that I want to sharewith you as well as those who are special to my heart. A PASSAGE INTO LIFE is for people who are hurting; also for hopeful people, joyful people, people of faith, and people who have little faith or no faith. It is for saint and sinner alike. It is to help anyone who has been hurt mentally, physically or spiritually. It is also for anyone who harms others in a big way or small way, any way at all. I believe that everyone who finds himself or herself in trouble in this life can find a way out. You will need the help of others who love the Lord God, who genuinely care about what happens to you. They may not always seem to do things the right wayyour way. They may seem like they are hypocrites or insincere at times, or seem harsh, giving you some tough love. But they can be your stepping stone, to lift you up out of deep despair, disgrace, shame, unhappiness and hopelessness if you are willing to listen to the voice of the Lord in His grace and wisdom, and believe the Lord will help you. The voice and word of God tells us of the good and the evil things that happen in this life. When we find ourselves facing problems, troubles or the worst of evils, God can lead us to what is good and perfect through Jesus Christ. When some people have done things to harm and hurt you, call the Lord!!! God can pick you up and lead you into healing, goodness, and wholeness so that you will be able to keep on going in this life no matter what may happen or what may have happened to you in the past. It is important that you believe God is real, and that this real, living God who created us all and all things in the world and beyond, is not just somewhere out there, but always near to you and the situation you may find yourself in, whether youve been listening to him or not. Learn what God can do to and for all kinds of people and what He has done through Jesus Christ with people who lost belief and faith in God, or who have stopped paying attention to Him. If you never knew Godor about Godor you lost your belief and faith in Him, you must learn or re-learn about this Creator and keeper of us all. The Holy Scripturesthe Bible, the word of Godis the key. It is important to know that someone faithful to the Lord God can help you understand. Pray, and ask God about this. I believe in God through Jesus Christ. You may guess that I am a member of the Christian faitha sinnerwho sometimes thinks she is doing the right thing, the best thing, only to find she has made mistakes in judgment or in what she has done, without knowing better or thinking that it was right or the better thing to do at the ti

READING: 'I am inclined to think that we want new forms . . . as well as thoughts', confessed Elizabeth Barrett to Robert Browning in 1845. The Oxford Handbook of Victorian Poetry provides a closely-read appreciation of the vibrancy and variety of Victorian poetic forms, and attends to poems as both shaped and shaping forces. The volume is divided into four main sections. The first section on 'Form' looks at a few central innovations and engagements—'Rhythm', 'Beat', 'Address', 'Rhyme', 'Diction', 'Syntax', and 'Story'. The second section, 'Literary Landscapes', examines the traditions and writers (from classical times to the present day) that influence and take their bearings from Victorian poets. The third section provides 'Readings' of twenty-three poets by concentrating on particular poems or collections of poems, offering focused, nuanced engagements with the pleasures and challenges offered by particular styles of thinking and writing. The final section, 'The Place of Poetry', conceives and explores 'place' in a range of ways in order to situate Victorian poetry within broader contexts and discussions: the places in which poems were encountered; the poetic representation and embodiment of various sites and spaces; the location of the 'Victorian' alongside other territories and nationalities; and debates about the place - and displacement - of poetry in Victorian society. This Handbook is designed to be not only an essential resource for those interested in Victorian poetry and poetics, but also a landmark publication—provocative, seminal volume that will offer a lasting contribution to future studies in the area.

READING: This carefully crafted ebook: “The Shepherd's Calendar and Other Tales from Scottish Highlands” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. James Hogg wrote some of his best stories in The Shepherd's Calendar, in which he defines the content and the manners of the traditional storytelling of Ettrick Forest, the mountainous region in Scotland where he grew up. They reveal Hogg's experiences as a young shepherd as it draws a picture of the pleasures and the dangers of the lives in Scottish Highlands. Some of these stories deal with the supernatural and explore psychological depths with a noteworthy intensity and insight. Large parts of these tales are written in a Scots dialect from the region of Ettrick Forest. The Shepherd's Calendar: Rob Dodds Mr Adamson of Laverhope The Prodigal Son The School of Misfortune George Dobson's Expedition to Hell The Souters of Selkirk The Laird of Cassway Tibby Hyslop's Dream Mary Burnet The Brownie of the Black Haggs The Laird of Wineholm Window Wat's Courtship A Strange Secret The Marvellous Doctor The Witches of Traquair Sheep Prayers Odd Characters Nancy Chisholm Snow-Storms The Shepherd's Dog The Expedition to Hell The Mysterious Bride The Wool-Gatherer The Hunt of Eildon James Hogg (1770-1835) was a Scottish poet, novelist and essayist who wrote in both Scots and English. As a young man he worked as a shepherd and farmhand, and was largely self-educated through reading. He was a friend of many of the great writers of his day, including Sir Walter Scott, of whom he later wrote an unauthorized biography.

READING: The one word that encompasses the life of Apostle Lymus L. Johnson, from the early stages of his ecclesiastic career up through this present day, is "inspirational." Through his struggles in the early years - eating apples for breakfast, apples for lunch, and apples for dinner - fried, stewed and baked - he has inspired people to keep the faith, for he has never seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging for bread. He has inspired preachers to continue in the way of the truth - to cry loud and spare not. Exhorting them to lift up their voices like a trumpet in Zion. Charging them to preach the truth, be it in season or out of season. To this very day his doctrine has not changed. Because the Lord has kept him in relative good health through the years, he inspires both young and old - letting them know that the Lord is a keeper, a deliverer, and a healer. He inspires you to hold on to see what the end is going to be. To look at his life - his meager beginnings to where he is today - he is a living testimony that if you seek first the kingdom of heaven and all its righteousness, blessings and all your desires will be added unto you. He has inspired people, through the word of God, to live their lives to Jesus Christ - be baptized in his name, receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and continue on to become "great" in their own unique way in the eyes of the Lord. Many have been saved, reclaimed and inspired by the ministry of Apostle Lymus L. Johnson. The following is not only the story of the consecrated life of Apostle Lymus L. Johnson, but also a look into the ministry itself with all of its struggles and triumphs. It is a living, printed testimony of what God can do! I'm sure that each of you who read this book will identify with some part of it. How your life or someone's life you know of has been affected in a similar manner. Many have tried to capture the uniqueness of his ministry... the "holler," the "comedy" and even his "assimilation of the scriptures." In this we can all agree, there is not another Apostle Lymus Johnson. Book jacket.
