READING: Beloved as "the Little Flower of Jesus," Marie-Fran oise-Th r se Martin-or SAINT TH R SE OF LISIEUX (1873-1897)-is remembered today for this, her spiritual autobiography. Before her too-young death from tuberculosis at the age of 24, she put down in words her simple yet profound approach to the worship of God, called her "little way," a philosophy of everyday goodness and appreciation of life and nature that anyone may follow. Remarkably, her deep piety grew from her own life-long suffering, from the loss of her mother at age four to her own ill health, and through them her dedication to obedience of and surrender to God's will.A favorite of spiritual seekers, this is a lovely work of devotion and prayfulness.

READING: Few spiritual figures have touched as many readers in the past century as Saint Therese of Lisieux, the saint popularly known as the Little Flower. Though she was only twenty-four years old when she died, her writings have had tremendous impact, making her one of the most popular spiritual writers in the twentieth century. Her autobiography, The Story of a Soul, has been a source of priceless inspiration ever since it was written, and has become the great spiritual bestseller of our time. A hundred years after her death in 1897, millions of copies have spread throughout the world and it has been translated into more than fifty languages. The reason for the continued success of her autobiography is, quite simply, that it is unlike any work of devotion and spiritual insight ever written. Once it is read, it cannot be forgotten. Its appeal across cultures and generations has been extensive, moving both peasants and popes, men and women, young and old -- people of every kind of intelligence and education succumb to its spell. Yet is not a conventional work of religious devotion; instead, it is in many ways a supernatural book. In the words of Pope Pius XI, Saint Therese "attained the knowledge of supernatural things in such abundant measure that she was able to point out the sure way of salvation to others," and it is especially in The Story of a Soul that she has pointed out this sure way to the generations that have followed her. As Therese herself said of this book just prior to her death, "What I have written will do a lot of good. It will make the kindness of God better known."

READING: Translated from the critical edition by John Clarke, OCD, 3rd ed. (1997). Includes Bibliography, general Index, and 11 photos. Two and a half years before her death in 1897 at the age of 24, as Thérèse Martin began writing down her childhood memories at the request of her blood sisters in the Lisieux Carmel, few could have guessed the eventual outcome. Yet this "story of my soul," first published in 1898 in a highly edited version, quickly became a modern spiritual classic, read by millions and translated into dozens of languages around the world. Decades later, in response to growing requests from scholars and devotees of the Saint, a facsimile edition of the manuscripts appeared, along with more popular French editions of what the Saint had actually written. Here, expressed with all of Thérèse's original spontaneity and fervor, we rediscover the great themes of her spirituality: confidence and love, the "little way," abandonment to God's merciful love, and her "mission" in the church and world today. Father John Clarke's acclaimed translation, first published in 1975 and now accepted as the standard throughout the English-speaking world, is a faithful and unaffected rendering of Thérèse's own words, from the original manuscripts. This new edition, prepared for the centenary of the Saint's death, includes a select bibliography of recent works in English on Thérèse, along with a new referencing system now widely used in studies of her doctrine.

READING: The Story of a Soul (l'Histoire d'une Âme) is the autobiography of Thérèse of Lisieux. It was first published on September 30, 1898, a year to the day after her death from tuberculosis at the age of 24, on September 30, 1897. The book was a single volume formed from three distinct manuscripts - manuscripts of different length, written at different times, addressed to different people, and differing from one another in character. The work of unifying these disparate manuscripts was carried out by Pauline, the sister of Thérèse. It was initially published with a limited audience in mind, the Carmelite convents and certain religious personalities, and just 2000 copies of the 475 page book were printed. It quickly became a publishing phenomenon however and Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus was canonised in 1925.------------------------------------------------------------St. Dismas Catholic Classic editions are all new translations, filled with numerous vivid illustrations and are offered at very reasonable prices in order to make these books readily available to the faithful.

READING: Story of a Soul is often called Therese's autobiography. She wrote three manuscripts: in 1895, for her sisters, a memoir of her childhood; in 1896, for her sister Marie, a souvenir of her last private retreat; and, in June 1897, for her prioress, Mother Marie de Gonzague, a reflection on her religious life. Translated into more than sixty languages, this classic in which Therese tells the story of her soul has had a miraculous impact on countless other souls. In Story of a Soul Therese writes "I find myself at a period in my life when I can cast a glance on the past," but in her letters we accompany her day by day. Read what she wrote at 14 on the day of her audience with Pope Leo XIII ("The good Pope is so old, one would say he is dead") and at 17 when she learned that her father would not be present at her reception of the veil: "Celine, my tears are falling as I write . . . ").

READING: Earlier editions of Therese's modern spiritual classic have often excluded passages, and refined her use of the French dialect often spoken by peasants. Edmondson translates everything and retains the charm that Therese intended to portray through changes in style. The result is a complete and unabridged work, longer than most other editions available today. Careful research and attention to accurate, flowing language are the hallmarks of this new translation of The Story of a Soul, written by the saint known to us as the "Little Flower."

READING: The autobiography, letters, songs and prayers of St. Therese of Lisieux are all present in this complete hardcover edition of The Story of a Soul. Saint Therese was born in Alençon, Orne in 1873. Her youth was fraught with peril - the disease enteritis, having claimed the lives of her four siblings, was a grave challenge which she surmounted. Her family was religious, practising fasts and festivals in accordance with the Christian calendar, and practised tenets of the Christian faith such as giving charity to the unfortunate. A religious young prodigy, Therese felt a calling to the Christian faith during her teenage years, journeying to Lisieux in Normandy to begin her life as a cloistered nun. She entered into the convent at the age of fifteen, and soon impressed her peers with her purity of devotion and a deep understanding of many matters of faith. She was well-read, having found and absorbed many of the Christian documents of the past such as the Imitation of Christ. (Cover image by Nheyob.)
