READING: Fourteen months ago, Matt Jerue made a decision that seemed so harmless at the time: to attend a high school football game. The result of that choice led him down a tortured path where anger, confusion, and self-doubts were intricately woven into every wrong move, making his sophomore year nearly unbearable. But eventually it seemed that the agony had a purpose, when he heard the words "I love you" as he lay with the most beautiful girl in the world in his arms. The adults in his life, however, had a different plan, and he was forced to leave his friends behind, move to a new town, and enroll in his third high school in less than two years. As Matt struggles with bitterness, resentment, and the consequences of his past, he finds unexpected friendships and a reawakening of his dream to form a rock band. And through it all are enduring thoughts of Taryn McIntyre.Headstrong II is the continuing story of a young man's emotional war between his troubled past and achieving his dreams. The message of hope transcends high school and touches anyone who has faced challenges and setbacks, and still strives to reach their goals.

READING: Psychology is the science that will determine who wins and who loses the wars of the 21st century, just as physics ultimately led the United States to victory in World War II. Changes in the world's political landscape coupled with radical advances in the technology of war will greatly alter how militaries are formed, trained, and led. Leadership under fire - and the traits and skills it requires - is also changing. Grant, Lee, Pershing, Patton - these generals would not succeed in 21st century conflicts. In Head Strong: How Psychology Is Revolutionizing War, Michael D. Matthews explores the many ways that psychology will make the difference for wars yet to come, from revolutionary advances in soldier selection and training to new ways of preparing soldiers to remain resilient in the face of horror and to engineering the super-soldier of the future. These advancements will ripple out to impact on the lives of all of us, not just soldiers. Amputees will have "intelligent" life-like prosthetics that simulate the feel and function of a real limb. Those exposed to trauma will have new and more effective remedies to prevent or treat post-traumatic stress disorder. And a revolution in training - based heavily in the military's increasing reliance on immersive simulations - will radically alter how police, fire, and first-responder personnel are trained in the future. At its heart, war is the most human of endeavors. Psychology, as the science of human behavior, will prove essential to success in future war. Authored by a West Point military psychologist, this book is one of the first to expose us to the smarter wars, and the world around them, to come.

READING: Just prior to his death in 2005, August Wilson, arguably the most important American playwright of the last quarter-century, completed an ambitious cycle of ten plays, each set in a different decade of the twentieth century. Known as the Twentieth-Century Cycle or the Pittsburgh Cycle, the plays, which portrayed the struggles of African-Americans, won two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama, a Tony Award for Best Play, and seven New York Drama Critics Circle Awards. August Wilson: Completing the Twentieth-Century Cycle is the first volume devoted to the last five plays of the cycle individually—Jitney,Seven Guitars, King Hedley II, Gem of the Ocean, and Radio Golf—and in the context of Wilson's entire body of work. Editor Alan Nadel's May All Your Fences Have Gates: Essays on the Drama of August Wilson, a work Henry Louis Gates called definitive, focused on the first five plays of Wilson's cycle. This new collection examines from myriad perspectives the way Wilson's final works give shape and focus to his complete dramatic opus. It contains an outstanding and diverse array of discussions from leading Wilson scholars and literary critics. Together, the essays in Nadel's two volumes give Wilson's work the breadth of analysis and understanding that this major figure of American drama merits. The Book The History of India as Told by Its Own Historians

Genre History
Pages 590
ISBN 9781108055871
Language English, Spanish, And French

READING: This extensive eight-volume work was first published between 1867 and 1877 by the linguist John Dowson (1820-81) from the manuscripts of the colonial administrator and scholar Sir Henry Miers Elliot (1808-53). Before his death, hoping to bolster British colonial ideology, Elliot had intended to evaluate scores of Arabic and Persian historians of India, believing that his translations would demonstrate the violence of the Muslim rulers and 'make our native subjects more sensible of the immense advantages accruing to them under the mildness and the equity of our rule'. Volume 5 charts the end of the Afghan dynasty in 1526 and most of the reign of Akbar, as frankly recounted in Abd-ul-Qadir Bada'uni's Muntakhab-ut-Tawarikh (1595). It also includes chronicles of the rule of the second Mughal emperor, Humayun (1508-56), and the Tarikh-i-Akbari. The appendices contain Elliot's notes on aspects of Indian culture.

READING: Far more than any professional historian, Shakespeare is responsible for whatever notions most of us possess about English medieval history. Anyone who appreciates the dramatic action of Shakespeare's history plays but is confused by much of the historical detail will welcome this guide to the Richards, Edwards, Henrys, Warwicks and Norfolks who ruled and fought across Shakespeare's page and stage. Not only theater-goers and students, but today's film-goers who want to enrich their understanding of film adaptations of plays such as Richard III and Henry V will find this revised edition of Shakespeare's English Kings to be an essential companion. Saccio's engaging narrative weaves together three threads: medieval English history according to the Tudor chroniclers who provided Shakespeare with his material, that history as understood by modern scholars, and the action of the plays themselves. Including a new preface, a revised further reading list, genealogical charts, an appendix of names and titles, and an index, the second edition of Shakespeare's English Kings offers excellent background reading for all of the ten history plays.
