READING: In April of 1972, SEAL Lieutenant Tom Norris risked his life in an unprecedented ground rescue of two American airmen who were shot down behind enemy lines in North Vietnam, a feat for which he would be awarded the Medal of Honor--an award that represents the pinnacle of heroism and courage. Just six months later, Norris was sent on a dangerous special reconnaissance mission that would take his team deep into enemy territory. On that mission, they engaged a vastly superior force. In the running gun battle that ensued, Lieutenant Norris was severely wounded; a bullet entered his left eye and exited the left side of his head. SEAL Petty Officer Mike Thornton, under heavy fire, fought his way back onto a North Vietnamese beach to rescue his officer. This was the first time Tom and Mike had been on a combat mission together. Mike's act of courage and loyalty marks the only time in modern history that the Medal of Honor has been awarded in a combat action where one recipient received the Medal for saving the life of another. By Honor Bound is the story of Tom Norris and Mike Thornton, two living American heroes who grew up very differently, entered military service and the Navy SEAL teams for vastly different reasons, and were thrown together for a single combat mission--a mission that would define their lives from that day forward.

READING: In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Russians from all ranks of society were bound together by a culture of honor. In this book, one of the foremost scholars of early modern Russia explores the intricate and highly stylized codes that made up this culture. Drawing on a rich array of archival and published sources, Nancy Shields Kollmann describes how these codes were manipulated to construct identity and enforce social norms - and also to defend against insults, to pursue vendettas, and generally to unsettle communities. She offers compelling evidence for a new view of the relationship of state and society in the Russian empire, and her richly comparative approach enhances knowledge of statebuilding in premodern Europe.

Suspecting the perpetrator of this villainous deed is the same renegade responsible for burning his neighbor's ranch, Stone is driven by rage as he rides out to rescue his wife. His encounter with Red Wolf and his warriors ends in defeat and leaves him with a blinding wrath and an obsession for revenge. Reena O'Donnell, a young missionary to the Canadian Assiniboine Indians, finds Hunter, who is wounded and barely alive, and nurses him back to health. Though his body has healed, the deep scars of anger and lust for vengeance nearly destroy him. Will joining the North-West Mounted Police help him leave the past behind? Can Reena's faith and prayers make a difference in the life of Hunter, who has lost everything?

READING: When Micah Lassiter made a promise, he kept it no matter what it cost him. But his latest undercover assignment protecting a wealthy man's daughter from the crazed killer stalking her was testing that rock-solid code of honour as nothing ever had. Prudence Street was too independent to accept anyone's help, so he had to make her believe he was nothing more than her new next-door neighbour. But watching over this beautiful, beguiling woman had turned into the sweetest torture he had ever known. And it had led him to make another promise to himself. When this was over, when she was safe at last, he meant to make her his forever.

READING: As Bill Clinton said in his second inaugural address, “The divide of race has been America’s constant curse.” In Honor Bound, David Leverenz explores the past to the present of that divide. He argues that in the United States, the rise and decline of white people’s racial shaming reflect the rise and decline of white honor. “White skin” and “black skin” are fictions of honor and shame. Americans have lived those fictions for over four hundred years. To make his argument, Leverenz casts an unusually wide net, from ancient and modern cultures of honor to social, political, and military history to American literature and popular culture. He highlights the convergence of whiteness and honor in the United States from the antebellum period to the present. The Civil War, the civil rights movement, and the election of Barack Obama represent racial progress; the Tea Party movement represents the latest recoil. From exploring African American narratives to examining a 2009 episode of Hardball—in which two white commentators restore their honor by mocking U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder after he called Americans “cowards” for not talking more about race—Leverenz illustrates how white honor has prompted racial shaming and humiliation. The United States became a nation-state in which light-skinned people declared themselves white. The fear masked by white honor surfaces in such classics of American literature as The Scarlet Letter and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and in the U.S. wars against the Barbary pirates from 1783 to 1815 and the Iraqi insurgents from 2003 to the present. John McCain’s Faith of My Fathers is used to frame the 2008 presidential campaign as white honor’s last national stand. Honor Bound concludes by probing the endless attempts in 2009 and 2010 to preserve white honor through racial shaming, from the “birthers” and Tea Party protests to Joe Wilson’s “You lie!” in Congress and the arrest of Henry Louis Gates Jr. at the front door of his own home. Leverenz is optimistic that, in the twenty-first century, racial shaming is itself becoming shameful.

READING: “My name is Lucas Greywolf.” A raspy voice, as soft and sandy as the wind that blew across the desert, spoke directly into her ear. It was a gentle sound, but Aislinn wasn’t deceived. Like the winds it reminded her of, it could be whipped into a fury. . . Aislinn Andrews knows his name because his escape from prison has prompted a statewide manhunt. As lean and menacing as a panther, the fugitive invades her house, her bed, and then takes her as his hostage. Overnight, Aislinn’s safe and predictable life is upended by a man considered criminal and dangerous. However, his greatest threat to Aislinn isn’t the knife he wields, but his untame appeal. All his life, Lucas Greywolf has harbored a bitter grudge against Anglos, resenting even that half of his heritage. Years spent in prison for a crime he didn’t commit hasn’t quelled his fighting spirit, but only fanned it. After escaping, he comes face-to-face with blond, blue-eyed Aislinn Andrews, the epitome of everything he hates. Yet he must have her. Now the war Lucas wages is personal, and his fiercest enemy is his longing for the wrong woman. Two people. Two worlds. One shared moment of incandescent passion...when nothing else mattered. But can that unifying instant withstand everything that divides them, when the largest obstacle they face is the most difficult to overcome? Pride.
