READING: It would be wonderful if every Christian could maintain the newness and wholesomeness of his or her salvation experience. But the unfortunate reality is Christians do sin. There may be a number of Josephs and Daniels within the ranks of Christendom who succeed in retaining a sterling character from start to finish. Human experience, however, reveals that the greater part of God’s family consists of people like David, Samson, Jonah, Jacob, and Simon Peter; people who, for one reason or another, lose the enthusiasm, spiritual strength, and sensitivity that once characterized their lives. Spiritual battles, temptations, disappointments, and failures take their toll. Harmful indiscretions cause painful bruising to the soul. Prodigal sons and daughters abound. But in spite of self-inflicted wounds there is good news; there is great news. God’s love and compassion abound even more. His desire is not to discard damaged lives. God’s intention is to restore wayward sons and daughters to their proper place in His family. The Father’s plan is to make them “better than new.” This book explores the process by which the “better than new” condition can be realized.

The Book Shakespeare Adaptation Psychoanalysis
The Author Matthew Biberman
The Publisher Routledge
Release Date2017-01-12
Genre Drama
Pages 146
ISBN 9781317056256
Language English, Spanish, And French

READING: In Shakespeare, Adaptation, Psychoanalysis, Matthew Biberman analyzes early adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays in order to identify and illustrate how both social mores and basic human psychology have changed in Anglo-American culture. Biberman contests the received wisdom that Shakespeare’s characters reflect essentially timeless truths about human nature. To the contrary, he points out that Shakespeare’s characters sometimes act and think in ways that have become either stigmatized or simply outmoded. Through his study of the adaptations, Biberman pinpoints aspects of Shakespeare’s thinking about behavior and psychology that no longer ring true because circumstances have changed so dramatically between his time and the time of the adaptation. He shows how the adaptors’ changes reveal key differences between Shakespeare’s culture and the culture that then supplanted it. These changes, once grasped, reveal retroactively some of the ways in which Shakespeare’s characters do not act and think as we might expect them to act and think. Thus Biberman counters Harold Bloom’s claim that Shakespeare fundamentally invents our sense of the human; rather, he argues, our sense of the human is equally bound up in the many ways that modern culture has come to resist or outright reject the behavior we see in Shakespeare’s plays. Ultimately, our current sense of 'the human' is bound up not with the adoption of Shakespeare’s psychology, perhaps, but its adaption-or, in psychoanalytic terms, its repression and replacement.

READING: What is Babylon? Babylon is that which blocks our access to the door of possibility, that which impoverishes. Babylon is the part of Western culture that imprisons us with its seductive images of false happiness and fulfillment. Better Than Babylon invites us to break free of our prisons. It urges us to reject the subtle enslavement that blinds us to what's important, the superficial images that prevent us from touching the soul of things. By engaging with key issues in our culture-women, family, education, work, the environment, war and peace, author Thomas Casey calls upon us to break through the door and go beyond our habitual ways of looking at them. This book is an invitation to go beyond Babylon: "Babylon, comfortable as it may be, need not be our lasting prison. The world of possibility is much vaster than we dared imagine. This truth can set us free" (from the Introduction). God has bigger hopes for us than Babylon could ever entertain. Book jacket.

READING: This book challenges, with several powerful arguments, some of our deepest beliefs about rationality, morality, and personal identity. The author claims that we have a false view of our own nature; that it is often rational to act against our own best interests; that most of us have moral views that are directly self-defeating; and that, when we consider future generations the conclusions will often be disturbing. He concludes that moral non-religious moral philosophy is a young subject, with a promising but unpredictable future.

READING: How do you define the good life? For many, success is measured not by health and happiness but by financial wealth. But such a worldview overlooks the important things in life: personal contentment, family time, spirituality, and the health of the planet and those living on it. A preoccupation with money and possessions is not only unhealthy, it can also drain the true joy from life. In recent years, millions have watched their American Dreams go up in smoke. The international financial collapse, inflation, massive layoffs, and burgeoning consumer debt have left people in dire financial straits—including John Robbins, a crusader for planet-friendly food and lifestyle choices, who lost his entire savings in an investment scam. But Robbins soon realized that there was an upside to our collective financial downturn: Curtailed consumerism could lead us to reassess our lives and values. The New Good Life provides a philosophical and prescriptive path from conspicuous consumption to conscious consumption. Where the old view of success was measured by cash, stocks, and various luxuries, the new view will be guided by financial restraint and a new awareness of what truly matters. A passionate manifesto on finding meaning beyond money and status, this book delivers a sound blueprint for living well on less. Discover how to • create your own definition of success based on your deepest beliefs and life experience • alleviate depression, lower blood pressure, and stay fit with inexpensive alternatives for high-cost medications • develop a diet that promotes better health—and saves you money • plan for—and protect yourself from—future economic catastrophes • cut down on your housing and transportation costs • live frugally without deprivation • follow in the footsteps of real people who have effectively forged new financial identities The New Good Life provides much-needed hope and comfort in a time of fear and uncertainty. Pages 256
ISBN 9780307887474
Language English, Spanish, And French

READING: A New York Times Bestseller A groundbreaking new view of human psychology that shows how eight key traits of human behavior—long perceived as liabilities—can be important hidden strengths. What if the inattentiveness that makes school or work a challenge holds the secret to your future as an entrepreneur? What if the shyness in groups that you hate is the source of deep compassion for others? What if the anxiety and nervousness you often feel can actually help energize you? What if the mood swings you sometimes experience can be the source of tremendous creativity? Renowned psychiatrist and popular on-air personality Dr. Dale Archer believes that labels for behavior like “ADHD,” “bipolar,” and “OCD” are normal human qualities—and contends that we all experience these and other psychological traits to some extent, yet fail to leverage the significant advantages they can offer. Worse, we stigmatize one another for these prevalent, widely shared aspects of our personalities. In Better Than Normal, Dr. Archer offers an empowering framework for redefining what constitutes mental health. Drawing on his twenty years of clinical experience, he describes eight traits of human behavior—heretofore known only as psychiatric diagnoses. Each of these occurs along a continuum rather than as a simple on-off switch (where “off ” means we’re fine, and “on” means we’ve got a problem). These are the aspects of our personality that we worry about the most, but these are also the very things that make us distinctive and different. According to Dr. Archer, each of us has a unique personality that emerges from our hardwired genetics and individual life experiences. With Better Than Normal, you can map your individual characteristics by taking the eight trait self-assessment quiz and see how what makes you different can indeed make you exceptional. Filled with engaging anecdotes and practical tools to help you capitalize on your unique characteristics, Better Than Normal offers a new and liberating way to look at ourselves and others.

The Book They Know Us Better Than We Know Ourselves
The Author Bridget Brown
The Publisher NYU Press
Release Date2007-08-01
Genre History
Pages 247
ISBN 0814799213
Language English, Spanish, And French

READING: Since its emergence in the 1960s, belief in alien abduction has saturated popular culture, with the ubiquitous image of the almond-eyed alien appearing on everything from bumper stickers to bars of soap. Drawing on interviews with alleged abductees from the New York area, Bridget Brown suggests a new way for people to think about the alien phenomenon, one that is concerned not with establishing whether aliens actually exist, but with understanding what belief in aliens in America may tell us about our changing understanding of ourselves and our place in the world. They Know Us Better Than We Know Ourselves looks at how the belief in abduction by extraterrestrials is constituted by and through popular discourse and the images provided by print, film, and television. Brown contends that the abduction phenomenon is symptomatic of a period during which people have come to feel increasingly divested of the ability to know what is real or true about themselves and the world in which they live. The alien abduction phenomenon helps us think about how people who feel left out create their own stories and fashion truths that square with their own experience of the world.
