READING: North Somerset has seen great changes in the last two centuries, and this evocative collection of old and new photographs shows how three of the county's communities, Portishead, Pill and Long Ashton, have altered and grown through time. All three had a close relationship with the old maritime port of Bristol, which shaped their history. As can be seen in these beautifully illustrated pages, many of the streets, shops, houses and workplaces have greatly changed. Sitting on the edge of the Severn Estuary, Portishead was an insignificant North Somerset village in 1811, with a population of just 369. It was transformed over the next 100 years into a popular seaside resort with a busy dock. Today, Portishead has reinvented itself as a cosmopolitan town, complete with a magnificent marina. Dependent on Bristol's sea trade, Pill has had to adapt to the closure of Bristol's docks, while Long Ashton has grown from a rural outpost into a prosperous village.

READING: Bridport is a thriving market town in western Dorset. It lies a short distance inland of a spectacular section of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, and is surrounded by some equally attractive hilly countryside. Although the town originated in Saxon times, it expanded a great deal in the Middle Ages, partly due to the success of the local rope industry. Many of its products were used in the local fishing and shipbuilding industries, which were concentrated around Bridport Harbour. At one time, Bridport Harbour was the second largest producer of ships in the country. In an early example of marketing, when the railway reached here in the 1880s, its name was changed to West Bay in the hope that this would sound more attractive to tourists. Comprising a magnificent range of images old and new, this book explores the historical development of this fascinating town and its attractive surrounding area.

Situated within the the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire, now Caerphilly, the advent of the iron and coal industry at the head of the valley changed all that; but more important, perhaps, was the construction of the Sirhowy Tramroad linking Tredegar with Newport.

READING: Gillingham was once an independent and separate borough with its own character and personality, but in 1998 it lost this separate identity when it joined Chatham, Rochester and Strood to become part of the unitary authority of Medway Council. Today, Gillingham s High Street stretches from the railway station to Medway Park. The original settlement of Gillingham stood on the bank of the River Medway where today there is the Strand leisure park. Together with neighbouring Chatham, Gillingham was home for many servicemen and women. The Navy s connection with the River Medway dates back to the sixteenth century and official records show that by 1547 storehouses had been acquired here, marking the establishment of a Royal Dockyard here at Gillingham. Join author John Clancy on a photographic tour of Gillingham and its environs, showcasing the area s many points of interest.

READING: Tourism was born in Market Harborough in 1841 when Thomas Cook, a local cabinetmaker, set off towards Leicester and had his dream of worldwide working-class travel. The town was born to serve travellers. Centuries before, the town had been built to provide a market place for trades-people near to the 'new' highway connecting Northampton and Leicester. Eight hundred years later, the market is still busy, though now indoors, and the original Square is still bustling with shoppers. As a boy on the playing fields of the local school, former England team captain Martin Johnson discovered his finesse in Rugby. In the nineteenth century, William Symington and his family put Market Harborough on the manufacturing map by creating pea flour and a range of tempting sauces. In the last century the town could claim to be a 'crisp capital' of England, being the home of Golden Wonder crisps.

READING: Linking recent advances in theoretical syntax and empirical research in language development, the book claims that second language acquisition is not totally distinct from first language acquisition, but rather is a replay, a relearning of language. It argues that Universal Grammar is a template guiding acquisition of L1 while constraining acquisition of L2. Assuming that a syntactic distinction crucial for language and its acquisition is the division between lexical and functional categories, it argues that the key to L2 as well as L1 acquisition of syntax is the mastery of morphological features and their linking to functional categories. It thus supports the availability of UG to the second language learner and the minimalist claim that cross-linguistic variation is morpholexical. Constructionism, the hypothesis of L2A proposed in this account, argues for a period of feature underspecification after loss of the L1 value, followed by a progressive building of the L2 value through specific constructions.

READING: Book Description Second Time Around This book depicts marriage disappointments and disillusions from a male prospective. Most men are fundamentally good and can resist the temptations of infidelity when given a choice. The challenges of dealing with a wife that constantly pushes them to the margin of her life can often be too much for some men to bear. As a young man right out of college, Norman, was assigned by his company to a territory in southern Pennsylvania. While living there Norman met Gail, an attractive middle-aged woman that was ten years his senior with a teenage daughter. Gail and Norman became inseparable and very much in love. Neither of them felt any pressure to get married. After six years Norman was promoted and had to transfer to another part of the country. Fearing that their age difference would cause their relationship to fade, Gail opted to stay in Pineville and they drifted apart. Many years later when their paths crossed again Gail realized that she was still in love with the man that she had considered her soul mate. However, Norman was now married with two kids and based in Seattle. His marriage is unstable and Gail soon realizes that there might be a second chance to have the man she has loved for nearly half her life. With his judgment clouded by the lack of attention from his wife Norman begins to feel that he might have chosen the wrong woman for his life partner.
